Senior Rotoscope Artist
Insight Global · Remote, India
Job Description
Role Summary
We are seeking a Senior Rotoscope Artist with strong experience creating precise, articulate mattes for high-end visual effects. You will isolate the most difficult elements in a plate — hair, motion blur, fine transparencies, and rapidly moving subjects — producing clean, temporally stable mattes that hold up under scrutiny, while mentoring junior roto and paint artists. You thrive in high-pressure, fast-paced environments and turn ambiguous creative briefs into flawless technical execution under tight deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Advanced Rotoscoping & Mattes: Architect and execute advanced rotoscoping and procedural matte generation for difficult elements (hair, motion blur, soft edges, fine transparencies, and heavy occlusion).
- Keying & Procedural Workflows: Develop chroma/luma keying strategies and combine keys with hand-drawn roto to produce the cleanest possible mattes for compositing.
- Temporal Stability & Quality Control: Establish studio roto quality thresholds, review high-stakes shots for edge quality and temporal stability (no chatter or slippage), and ensure mattes track accurately shot to shot.
- Paint & Cleanup Support: Support cleanup, wire/rig removal, and element prep as needed to hand clean plates and mattes to compositing.
- Cross-Team Communication & Brief Interpretation: Bridge creative and technical teams, proactively clarifying open-ended or ambiguous briefs and streamlining production momentum on fast turnarounds.
- Department Mentorship: Mentor junior artists in advanced rotoscope, matte, and keying techniques, and help raise the quality bar across the department.
- Asset & Pipeline Management: Enforce naming conventions and leverage cloud collaboration tools (such as Google Drive) alongside internal pipeline architecture for efficient asset review and handoff to matchmove and compositing.
Required Skills & Software Proficiency
- Core Software: Expert-level mastery of dedicated roto/paint software such as Silhouette, Mocha, and/or Nuke (roto, paint, and keying nodes).
- Technical Depth: Deep understanding of matte edge quality, motion blur handling, keying, and maintaining temporal stability across a sequence.
- Problem-Solving: Proven ability to isolate the most challenging elements and solve difficult matte problems under tight production schedules.
Qualifications & Experience
- Experience: Multiple years of professional VFX experience in feature film, episodic television, or high-end commercials; senior-level credits and roto lead experience strongly preferred.
- Showreel: An exceptional demo reel showcasing complex rotoscoping and keying — hair, motion blur, and fine transparencies.
Soft Skills: Exceptional communication, calm focus under extreme pressure, strong attention to detail, and the ability to navigate ambiguous project requirements with confidence.
