RLD Associates, Inc. · United States
Job Description
WORKERS COMPENSATION & GENERAL LIABILITY PREMIUM AUDITOR
RLD Associates, Inc. · Philadelphia, PA territory · Home-based with field travel
Pay: $30/billable hour (remote audits) · $40–$45/billable hour (on-site audits) · Est. $50,000–$60,000/year + benefits
Have you ever prepared payroll reports for an insurance auditor?
If you've worked in bookkeeping or payroll and handed an auditor payroll registers, 941s, and a general ledger, you already understand half of this job. Now we'd like you to be the auditor.
Workers' compensation and general liability premiums are based on estimated payroll and sales. At the end of the policy period, a premium auditor verifies the actual figures. You'll review the business's records, interview the owner or bookkeeper, and write a clear report for the insurance carrier.
No insurance experience is needed. We'll teach you that part. What we're looking for is comfort with financial records.
What the work looks like
- Reconciling payroll: tie payroll registers to 941s, state unemployment filings, and the general ledger
- Reviewing financial records: ledgers, cash disbursements, 1099s, and sales reports, including checking subcontractor payments and certificates of insurance
- Talking with business owners: learn what the business does and what each employee's job involves
- Classifying the business: apply insurance classification rules (our training focuses here)
- Writing it up: document your findings in Excel and our audit system
Audits are a mix of hybrid (done from home by phone, email, and document review) and field (on-site within about 60 miles of Philadelphia, typically 3–4 days a week depending on assignments).
You'll do well here if you have
- 2+ years of hands-on bookkeeping, payroll, or accounts payable experience
- Comfort with payroll registers, quarterly payroll tax returns, and general ledgers
- Solid Excel skills
- The discipline to manage your own schedule and meet due dates
- A professional, friendly phone manner
- A reliable vehicle and a valid driver's license
Big plus: You've prepared records for a premium audit. Even bigger plus: You've conducted premium audits.
Probably not the right fit if
- Your background is in sales, customer service, claims, or insurance agency work without hands-on payroll or bookkeeping
- You need a guaranteed salary, since pay is based on billable hours
- You prefer daily structure and direction
How pay works
You're paid $30 per billable hour for audits done from home and $40–$45 per billable hour for on-site audits, based on experience. Expected annual earnings for this area are $50,000–$60,000 a year and can take on more or less work to fit their goals. This is a full-time position with health, dental, vision, and life insurance; a 401(k); PTO; and paid training through RLD University.
Why people stay
- Real schedule freedom: Contact with insureds happens during business hours, but you choose when. Analysis and report writing can happen whenever suits you.
- No micromanagement: Meet your due dates, and the how, when, and where are up to you.
- Variety without chaos: Every business is different, but the process stays consistent.
- A scarce, valuable skill: Premium audit experience is in demand across the insurance industry.
Salary: $30 - $45 Hourly
