Job Description

Department Finance & Accounts

Reports to Chief Financial Officer / Group Finance Head

Location Kolkata, West Bengal

Experience 6–10 years post-qualification

Qualification Chartered Accountant (CA) preferred; CMA / M.Com with equivalent experience considered

Employment type Full-time

ROLE PURPOSE

The Manager – Accounts & Taxation owns the accuracy of the company's books and its standing with every tax authority it answers to. This is not a bookkeeping role. It is the person who closes the books on time every month, defends every number in an audit or assessment without flinching, and gives leadership numbers they can act on without double-checking. The role carries end-to-end responsibility for statutory tax compliance (GST, TDS, income tax) and for the general accounting function, and is expected to run both with minimal supervision.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES — TAXATION & STATUTORY COMPLIANCE

•    Own GST compliance in full: monthly and annual returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9/9C), input tax credit reconciliation against GSTR-2B, e-invoicing and e-way bill compliance, and timely resolution of notices or mismatches.

•    Manage TDS/TCS end-to-end — computation, deduction, deposit, quarterly returns (24Q/26Q/27Q), and issuance of Form 16/16A within statutory deadlines.

•    Handle corporate income tax: advance tax computation, tax audit (Form 3CD) coordination, income tax return filing, and deferred tax working.

•    Represent the company in GST, income tax, and other departmental assessments, audits, and notices, working directly with external counsel or consultants where required.

•    Track changes in tax law and circulars, and translate them into concrete changes to company process before they become a compliance gap.

•    Maintain a live compliance calendar across all applicable statutes and entities, with zero tolerance for missed due dates.

•    Coordinate ROC filings and other secretarial-adjacent compliance with the company secretary or external consultants.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES — GENERAL ACCOUNTING

•    Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual book closure process, including accruals, provisions, and reconciliations, to a fixed closing calendar.

•    Maintain the general ledger and ensure every entry is supported, correctly classified, and audit-ready at all times — not just at year-end.

•    Prepare monthly MIS, cash flow statements, and variance analysis for leadership, flagging deviations from budget with a reason, not just a number.

•    Manage accounts payable and receivable, vendor and customer reconciliations, and banking operations including fund positioning and reconciliation.

•    Lead statutory and internal audits end-to-end — schedule preparation, query resolution, and closure of observations — and own the finalization of annual financial statements under Ind AS / Schedule III.

•    Supervise and develop the accounts team (accountants, executives), review their work, and be the point of escalation for anything they cannot resolve.

•    Own the accuracy of books in Tally/ERP, including chart of accounts discipline, cost center tagging, and system-level controls that prevent errors rather than just catching them.

•    Partner with functional heads on budgeting, cost control, and financial planning inputs relevant to their operations.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

•    Chartered Accountant with 6–10 years of post-qualification experience, including at least 3 years leading a taxation and accounts function directly (not as part of a larger shared team).

•    Demonstrated ownership of GST and income tax compliance for an entity with real transaction volume and complexity — not just review sign-off.

•    Experience finalizing accounts and managing statutory audit as the primary point of contact, not an assistant to one.

•    Prior experience in manufacturing, multi-entity group structures, or promoter-led businesses is an advantage.

SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES

•    Working command of Tally (or equivalent ERP), GST portal, TRACES, and MS Excel at a level that doesn't require IT support for routine tasks.

•    Judgment under ambiguity — comfortable taking a defensible position on a grey-area tax question rather than escalating everything upward.

•    Precision and follow-through. Deadlines here are statutory, not aspirational.

•    Direct communicator who reports bad news early and with a proposed fix, not late and with an excuse.

•    Willingness to be hands-on. This role does the work, it does not only supervise the work.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

•    Zero missed statutory due dates (GST, TDS, income tax, ROC) across the compliance calendar.

•    Monthly books closed within (X) working days of month-end, every month.

•    Statutory audit completed with no material observations attributable to the accounts function.

•    Tax notices and assessments resolved within statutory timelines with no avoidable penalty or interest exposure.

This description reflects the core scope of the role and is not exhaustive. Responsibilities may evolve with business needs.
