Job Summary:

This role supports all aspects of food preparation, trays; washes dishes and keeps kitchen clean and orderly. Helps utilize food and supplies efficiently for food preparation, baking, meal service, and kitchen sanitation operations. This position has a significant role in the preparation of homemade baked goods, desserts, breads, muffins, cookies, and specialty items that enhance the dining experience for residents. The position works closely with the Cook and Food Services Director to ensure nutritious, appealing, and high-quality meals and baked products are prepared and served in accordance with established recipes, food safety standards, and resident preferences.

Reports to the Food Services Director.

 

Job Duties:

Food Preparation and Baking and Cooking Support

  • Assist the Cook with meal preparation, ingredient preparation, portioning, and food assembly.
  • May assist in preparation of salads, desserts, beverages, and other meal components.
  • Assist with baking preparation and production of baked goods, including measuring ingredients, mixing, portioning, and finishing products.
  • Prepare recipes and food items as directed by the Cook or Food Services Director.
  • Set up trays, portion menu items, and assemble meal components according to resident menu selections.
  • Help ensure meals are prepared, plated, and served in a timely and attractive manner.
  • Assist with efficient utilization of food, ingredients, and supplies.
  • Assist with daily food preparation and meal production.
  • Prepare a variety of baked goods including breads, rolls, muffins, cookies, cakes, pastries, pies, and specialty desserts.
  • Prepare desserts and baked items for daily meal service, holidays, resident celebrations, and special events.
  • Assist in menu development by providing ideas for seasonal desserts, baked goods, and special dietary offerings.
  • Adapt recipes when necessary to meet texture-modified, diabetic-friendly, low-sugar, gluten-free, or other therapeutic dietary requirements.
  • Maintain high standards for taste, appearance, freshness, and consistency of all baked products.

Meal Service

  • Prepare cold drinks, water, coffee, and other beverages for meal service.
  • Assemble trays with hot foods, desserts, salads, condiments, and beverages.
  • Begin tray line by reading menu tickets to the Cook and assisting with tray assembly.
  • Place trays in carts and deliver meal service as assigned.
  • Serve meals, hot beverages, and other menu items to residents in the dining room.
  • Deliver meal trays or transport food carts to resident care areas.
  • Retrieve meal carts following service and return them to the kitchen.
  • Clear dining room after meals and prepare for subsequent meal service.

Dining Room and Kitchen Operations

  • Set tables and dining areas for meal service.
  • Ensure adequate supplies of napkins, placemats, bibs, utensils, condiments, and beverage supplies.
  • Fill and maintain condiment containers.
  • Assist with receiving and storing food and supply deliveries, using proper stock rotation practices.
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas, storage rooms, equipment, and service areas.

Sanitation and Housekeeping

  • Wash dishes, pots, pans, utensils, and food service equipment.
  • Clean and sanitize kitchen equipment, carts, counters, tables, and work surfaces.
  • Sweep and maintain kitchen and dining room floors.
  • Remove trash and recycling.
  • Adhere to all food safety, sanitation, infection control, and workplace safety requirements.

Resident Service and Teamwork

  • Foster a respectful, hospitable, and resident-centered dining experience.
  • Communicate resident dietary concerns, meal issues, or service observations to the Cook, Food Services Director, nursing staff, or supervisor.
  • Assist with other food service and kitchen-related duties as assigned.

 

HIPAA Privacy & Security:

This position has no computer access to PHI. There is access to limited PHI verbally and on paper (such as menus and patient lists). The incumbent receives initial and annual training on HIPAA Privacy.

Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
  • Must have good stamina and be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, push and pull throughout the shift
  • Must be willing and able to travel to work in any type of weather; respect and support Glenmont’s purpose, mission, and chain of command; be able to complete tasks on a timely basis
  • Must be on call and work overtime as needed to fulfill the job

 

Experience, Skills and Work Relationships:

  • Required: Fluent in English, with strong verbal and written communication skills essential to job performance.
  • Must be able to follow verbal instructions, accept instructions, critiques, and suggestions
  • Must be able to work efficiently and coordinate multiple tasks, while working harmoniously with other staff, especially staff from other departments (e.g. Christian Science Nursing)
  • Must work as a member of Glenmont’s team, demonstrating ability to work well with co-workers in all departments. 
  • One to three years of experience in food service, bakery, commercial kitchen, culinary, dietary services, or hospitality settings preferred.
  • Experience preparing baked goods from scratch.
  • Experience using commercial mixers, ovens, proofers, and other baking equipment preferred.
  •  Culinary arts, baking, pastry, or food service training a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare high-quality baked goods for large groups or care type facility food service environments.

 

Evaluation:

Ongoing self-evaluation is encouraged throughout the year. Receives a 90 Day evaluation and an annual performance evaluation.
