Job Description
Franklin Street is currently seeking a Staff Accountant to join our team in Tampa, FL.
The ideal candidate must possess 2-3 years of corporate accounting experience and working knowledge of property and casualty insurance accounting, including Direct Bill commission and premium concepts. A Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field is required.
Position Overview:
The Staff Accountant will support Franklin Street and our affiliated businesses with accounting services. Successful candidates will be those possessing a background in insurance accounting, with strong systems proficiency, and an enthusiasm for customer service. Within that staff accountant role, this position owns the department's Direct Bill and daily cash functions Direct Bill processing, cash receipts intake and application, deposit log preparation and distribution, and the monthly revenue accrual that feeds the close while performing the journal entries, reconciliations, and internal-control functions expected across the month-end cycle.
- Follows in-depth U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to perform a variety of accounting functions for the insurance division and affiliated service companies.
- Prepares monthly journal entries and accruals as part of the close cycle.
- Prepares general ledger and bank reconciliations; researches and resolves reconciling items ahead of the close deadline. Owns the receipts side of the cash reconciliation.
- Processes accounts receivable within the agency management system, coordinating with insurance team to ensure proper application and follow up on outstanding items.
- Responsible for monitoring accounting processes, internal controls, and the agency management system; supports the department's premium-trust and record-retention controls, handling client premium and Direct Bill funds consistent with their fiduciary/trust nature.
- Owns end-to-end Direct Bill processing: receipt of carrier and broker commission, entry, and exception review.
- Follows up on direct bill commissions expected but not yet received from carriers, including endorsement commission that is commonly omitted.
- Processes daily cash receipts intake, posting, and application to the correct client accounts keeping application current so funds never sit unapplied.
- Prepares and distributes the daily deposit log; follows up on account manager acknowledgment and escalates persistent non-compliance to the Team Leader.
- Intakes and routes Direct Bill payment notifications, enforcing a single standardized submission channel.
- Produces the monthly Direct Bill revenue accrual and supporting detail for Team Leader review and prepares the close-cycle cash reconciliation for month-end close.
- Maintains and continuously improves the Direct Bill Processing & Analysis Reporting and the streamlined cash receipts process.
- Communicates daily with management; assists Insurance Senior Management and Account Managers in resolving accounting-related issues as needed.
- Documents and cross-trains processes maintains written procedures for Direct Bill and cash receipt workflows so no function is a single point of failure.
- Works on special projects and performs other duties as assigned.
- Minimum 23 years of applicable corporate accounting experience required.
- Possesses working knowledge of property and casualty insurance accounting, including Direct Bill commission and premium concepts.
- Bachelors degree (BA/BS) in accounting, finance, or related field from a regionally accredited college or university or applicable equivalent accounting experience required.
- Proficiency in AMS360 or similar insurance software; NetSuite exposure helpful.
- High level of proficiency in: Excel, Word, Outlook, applicable accounting software, and internet/application software are required along with a willingness and ability to learn new software programs required.
- Broad, in-depth understanding of U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Exhibits highly developed written, oral, and presentation skills (English), both in person and over the phone. Ability to communicate with an internal department and work in a collaborative manner.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving skills.
- Ability to query, manage, comprehend, and provide analysis for large data sets and complex business documents, etc. required.
- Strong work ethic and the ability to hit set deadlines. Demonstrated ability to adhere to strict deadlines on a daily, weekly, monthly basis, including a disciplined daily cash routine.
- Ability to work on multiple assignments, prioritize tasks, and manage rapidly changing assignments in a team environment.
- Must be highly organized and demonstrate a high level of attention to detail, particularly in high-volume cash processing.
- Ability to follow direction and work independently with minimal supervision.
