Staff Attorney- Loyola Project for the Innocent

Job Description

Work on cases involving claims of wrongful conviction alongside post-conviction counsel at the Loyola Project for the Innocent. The Staff Attorney will supervise law students and interns on their assigned cases.

Position Specific Responsibilities/ Accountabilities

Client case work

  • Staff attorney will be responsible for developing and implementing investigation plans and litigation strategies, which often includes compiling case records, evaluating police reports and other crucial case documents, locating and interviewing witnesses, and drafting witness statements.

  • Litigation duties involve drafting habeas corpus petitions, directing investigations, court- appearances and oral arguments as necessary, and conducting motion practice and evidentiary hearings.

  • Staff attorney will maintain attorney client relationship in accordance with the rules of professional responsibility applicable to attorneys practicing in California.

Work with students

  • Staff attorneys will work with and, in conjunction with supervising attorneys, monitor, direct and provide feedback to clinical students on their casework.

Some travel is required for case investigation and client meetings.

Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

Requisite Qualifications

  • Must possess a Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school. Candidates must be a member in good standing of the State Bar of California, or be a member in good standing of another U.S. state bar and sit for the next available California Bar Examination, obtaining California Bar membership within one year of hire.

  • A minimum one year of experience practicing law (will consider law school clinical experience). Prior post-conviction, criminal, or other in-court litigation experience or training is valued and strongly preferred.

  • Experience in criminal law is preferred.

  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills and work well in teams

Staff Term (Fixed Term)

Salary range

$78,600.00 - $102,200.00 Salary commensurate with education and experience.
