Role OverviewA global manufacturer of agricultural and off-highway equipment is adding a senior engineer to its embedded Linux platform team. This group owns the board support packages and foundational system software that the rest of the vehicle stack is built on, and the machines keep getting more complex. Each new generation adds compute, sensors, and connected features, and this team makes sure the platform underneath can carry all of it.The team is small, technical, and moves quickly. They care more about how a person thinks than about a perfect keyword match. If you enjoy hard problems, want to work close to the hardware, and like shipping at a fast pace, this is a strong fit.A Day in the LifeYou might start the morning chasing down a boot issue on new target hardware, spend the afternoon extending a platform service that application teams depend on, and finish by reviewing how a change in one subsystem ripples through the rest of the machine. You will work directly with hardware engineers and with the software teams that consume your work. AI-assisted development tools are part of the daily workflow here, and the team expects engineers to use them well while still being able to reason through a problem on their own.Key ResponsibilitiesBring up, configure, and maintain board support packages for embedded Linux compute platforms used on production vehicles.Design and build core platform software, including drivers, system services, and middleware that other engineering teams rely on.Debug problems that cross the hardware and software boundary, working hands-on with hardware engineers when needed.Own Linux build output for your area, including images, toolchains, and repeatable build processes.Consider how individual components interact across the full vehicle, treating the machine as a system of connected systems.Take personal ownership of technical decisions and deliverables, and move work forward quickly on ambiguous problems.Contribute to code reviews, design discussions, and team standards.Required Qualifications8 to 14 years of professional software engineering experience, with a meaningful share of it in embedded or low-level systems work.Professional experience using Linux as your daily development environment and as the target platform for what you build. This is a firm requirement.Strong development skills in C or Rust. C++ will be considered when the work has been genuinely low level (drivers, kernel, firmware, hardware interfaces) and not application-layer development.Real interest in hardware and low-level problems. Direct hardware experience is a plus but not required.A track record of personally owning hard technical work, with the ability to explain the specific decisions you made and why.Willingness to work a hybrid schedule from Sioux Falls, SD, Oak Brook, IL, or Arizona.Nice-to-Have Skills and ExperienceOpen source contributions, particularly to Linux, embedded, or systems-level projects.Linux kernel or device driver development.Board bring-up experience on new or custom hardware.Embedded Linux build systems such as Yocto or Buildroot.Experience in vehicle, off-highway, agricultural, industrial, or other machine-control environments. xzbcwsv Comfort using AI coding tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot) as part of a daily engineering workflow.
