BUILD THE INFRASTRUCTURE THAT TECHNOLOGY RUNS ON

Advantage Technology is hiring a Structured Cabling Technician I for our Bridgeport, West Virginia team.

This is a hands-on field position for someone who enjoys working with tools, building things correctly, solving practical problems, and seeing the results of their work at the end of the day.

You will work with our cabling, network, engineering, and project teams installing the physical infrastructure behind modern technology environments—including copper cabling, fiber, network racks, patch panels, wireless infrastructure, cameras, telecommunications systems, and other low-voltage technology.

This is not a remote position and it is not a help-desk job. Most of your work will take place at commercial, education, government, and other customer locations throughout North Central West Virginia.

ABOUT ADVANTAGE TECHNOLOGY

Advantage Technology was founded in West Virginia in 2002 with one employee and a simple belief: customers deserve a technology partner that solves real problems, communicates clearly, and stands behind its work.

Today, Advantage has grown into an independently owned technology company with more than 100 employees, multiple offices, and more than 800 customers served throughout West Virginia, Maryland, the DMV, and surrounding markets.

Our services include managed IT, cybersecurity, cloud and Microsoft solutions, networking and wireless, telecommunications, structured cabling and fiber, physical security, and professional technology services.

We have grown customer by customer and project by project, and we continue to invest heavily in talented technical people who want to learn, take ownership, and build a career.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Structured Cabling Technician I works as part of our field installation team performing commercial low-voltage and structured cabling projects.

This can be an excellent opportunity for someone early in their career who already has basic cabling, construction, electrical, telecommunications, or technical experience and wants to develop into a professional structured-cabling technician.

We are looking for someone who is dependable, productive, mechanically capable, willing to learn, and takes pride in clean work .

Technical experience is important, but so are attitude, work ethic, professionalism, and reliability.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Install, route, secure, label, terminate, and test Category 5e, Category 6, Category 6A, and fiber-optic cabling.

  • Pull cable through ceilings, walls, conduit, J-hooks, cable trays, and other commercial pathways.

  • Terminate copper cabling into jacks, patch panels, and related equipment.

  • Assist with fiber installation, termination, testing, and troubleshooting based on experience.

  • Install and organize network racks, cabinets, patch panels, cable management, pathways, and related infrastructure.

  • Assist with installation of wireless access points, cameras, telecommunications equipment, and other low-voltage systems.

  • Use cable testing and certification equipment to verify installed cabling.

  • Properly label cables, racks, patch panels, outlets, and related equipment.

  • Read basic floor plans, cable schedules, drawings, and project instructions.

  • Follow project plans and direction provided by lead technicians, engineers, project managers, and supervisors.

  • Identify installation problems and communicate them quickly rather than allowing problems to delay the project.

  • Maintain accurate records of completed work, testing results, materials, and project progress.

  • Keep customer sites, work areas, company vehicles, tools, and equipment clean and organized.

  • Follow applicable TIA/EIA, BICSI, manufacturer, customer, and safety standards.

  • Travel to customer and project locations throughout North Central West Virginia and occasionally other Advantage service areas as required.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

We are more interested in finding the right person with mechanical ability, work ethic, and willingness to learn than someone who checks every technical box.

Successful candidates should have:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Basic knowledge of structured cabling, telecommunications, networking, electrical work, construction, or another related trade.

  • Comfort working with hand and power tools including drills, fish tapes, punch-down tools, crimpers, cable cutters, and similar equipment.

  • Ability to understand basic measurements, drawings, floor plans, cable routes, and written work instructions.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to work productively as part of a field crew.

  • Willingness to learn from senior technicians and accept coaching.

  • Dependable attendance and punctuality.

  • Professional communication and behavior when working at customer locations.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to regional job sites.

  • Ability to pass customer-required background or security screening when necessary.

EXPERIENCE THAT WILL HELP YOU STAND OUT

These are preferred, but we do not expect every Level I candidate to have all of them:

  • Previous commercial structured-cabling experience.

  • Cat 5e, Cat 6, or Cat 6A termination experience.

  • Fiber-optic cabling experience.

  • Experience using Fluke or other cable testing/certification equipment.

  • Commercial electrical or construction experience.

  • Experience installing racks, patch panels, J-hooks, cable tray, conduit, cameras, wireless access points, or low-voltage equipment.

  • Understanding of MDF and IDF telecommunications rooms.

  • BICSI Installer certification or interest in pursuing BICSI training and certification.

  • OSHA or other construction-safety training.

CLIENT AND JOB-SITE EXPECTATIONS

Our technicians represent Advantage Technology inside our customers' businesses, schools, government facilities, and other workplaces.

We expect you to:

  • Show up on time and prepared to work.

  • Work safely and follow job-site requirements.

  • Treat customers, coworkers, contractors, and other trades professionally.

  • Keep work areas clean and organized.

  • Take pride in neat cable routing, labeling, termination, and rack organization.

  • Communicate when you encounter a problem rather than hiding it or waiting until the end of the project.

  • Protect customer property and confidential information.

  • Complete assigned work efficiently without sacrificing quality.

  • Ask questions when you do not know something and learn from more experienced technicians.

  • Take responsibility for your work.

PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

This is an active field position.

Candidates must be able to:

  • Work from ladders and approved lifts.

  • Work above ceilings and in mechanical, telecommunications, and other limited-access spaces.

  • Stand, climb, bend, kneel, and work with tools for extended periods.

  • Safely lift and carry approximately 50 pounds independently and assist with heavier equipment when required.

  • Work in active commercial and construction environments.

  • Travel between the Bridgeport office and customer job sites.

  • Occasionally work evenings or weekends when project schedules, cutovers, or customer requirements make it necessary.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

After becoming established in the position:

  • Your work is clean, correctly terminated, labeled, tested, and documented.

  • Project leads can give you an assignment and trust that it will be completed properly.

  • You consistently arrive ready to work and contribute throughout the workday.

  • You become increasingly capable of completing cable runs, terminations, testing, and installations independently.

  • You communicate problems early and help the team keep projects moving.

  • Customers are comfortable having you work inside their facilities.

  • You protect the quality and reputation associated with Advantage Technology.

  • You continue developing your technical skills so you can advance into higher-level cabling and infrastructure positions.

Advantage Technology is an equal opportunity employer.
