Position Summary

Reporting to the President and CEO, the CFAO will be a seasoned nonprofit executive who will provide overarching financial and operational leadership for WMF and play a critical role in the execution of WMF's strategic plan. The CFAO will maintain efficient and transparent day-to-day operations, coordinate the annual budget and audit processes, and create an operational plan that advances WMF's strategic position. The CFAO will clearly articulate metrics for success, enhance systems and procedures, and contribute to strengthening WMF's workplace culture.

This is a hands-on leadership role that requires strong financial, operational, management, and human resources expertise. The CFAO will work closely with WMF's global staff, funders, and trustees, providing the guidance, tools, and resources needed to help the organization achieve its strategic goals.

Priorities & Responsibilities

Quickly get to know WMF as a whole - its leadership, history, culture, preservation programs, infrastructure, finances, and funding sources - and the substantive issues critical to the success of a complex global organization.

Define the global staffing and engagement strategy; strengthen procedures related to the staffing process including outreach, recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding; ensure compliance with applicable employment laws, policies, and regulations and maintain internal control procedures over the Human Resources function; manage payroll and benefits.

Direct and manage WMF's finance staff in implementing the daytoday accounting and fiscal operations (payroll, accounts payable, insurance, and general accounting and bookkeeping, including credit card and cash reconciliations) and develop policies to ensure quality assurance, internal control, overall financial health, and WMF solvency.

Define and maintain WMF's Risk Framework and associated policies and standards; procure and manage insurance policies to address risks.

Develop and implement financial plans and systems in support of WMF's strategic plan; ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, forecasting, and analysis which will help to inform programmatic investments, partnerships, and decision making.

Reinforce a sense of financial accountability, ownership, and discipline across the global organization.

Negotiate and manage working relationships with financial and banking entities, and, in collaboration with the Board, lead the implementation of WMF's investment policy, including the development of investment criteria, selection of investment managers, and ongoing monitoring of investments.

Establish an open and consistent dialogue with the President and CEO, the Executive Vice President, the Executive Team, key board members, and committee chairs as appropriate; prepare and present financial reports for trustees and ensure the effective functioning of the Audit & Finance and Investment Committees of the Board; advise and serve as a critical resource on matters of financial and administrative leadership and direction; communicate financial and operations information and recommendations in a concise and timely manner.

Be an integral partner and resource to the development department; support the development of budgets for grant proposals and financial reporting as required by funders; oversee revenue recognition and tracking of restricted funds while ensuring compliance with GAAP standards, and regulatory requirements.

Transform WMF's technology environment through partnership with senior leaders to fully leverage the ability to work collaboratively across geographies and simplify our digital environment.

Required Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be a proven hands-on finance executive with a collaborative approach to working on a team. Additionally, this person will have:

Fifteen or more years of progressively responsible work experience managing accounting, strategic finance, and/or investments in a nonprofit environment or possess equivalent experience.

In addition to deep financial expertise, demonstrated success leading organizational operations across, HR, technology, administration, and internal systems, with the ability to translate strategy into strong day-to-day execution.

Demonstrated ability to work at a strategic and tactical level, driving process, organization, and business practice changes.

Superior verbal and written communication skills and an ability to explain financial trends and concepts to a broad audience.

Adept at working with people from different cultures and backgrounds.

Excellent Excel, Word, PowerPoint and data analytic skills as well as experience with a cloud based accounting system.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with Intacct or similar accounting platforms

CPA or MBA

Experience in global nonprofits with operations on multiple continents

Experience using AI tools to improve operations and workflows

Someone who can impart credibility, trust, integrity, ethics, and enthusiasm.
