IT Technician

The IT Technician performs various functions, including the installation of commercial network and low voltage infrastructure wiring and equipment. The technician position commonly consists of the following obligations, tasks, duties, and responsibilities which they perform:

Undertakes the loading and installation of workstations, laptops, and peripheralsUndertakes the installation of data equipment, including data racks, patch panels, cable trays, etc.Utilizes appropriate testing equipment to test installed cablesProvides documentation of all information on all cable and equipmentimproves upon existing installation and troubleshooting proceduresPerforms cabling installations, including New Commercial Data, Voice, Fiber Optic and PagingOperates a variety of tools, such as hand tools, power tools, ladders, scissor lifts, and test equipmentTests systems and performs signal verificationAdheres to safety policies and procedures and reports all accidents, hazards, and equipment problemsTakes responsibility for installing new cables in new or existing buildingsPerforms termination and testing of new cablingResponsible for setting up new telecommunications framesInstalls Cat5e,Cat6, Cat6a, and fiber optic cabling systemsBuilds and installs racks, dresses and terminates closets, carries out tests and troubleshootsLabels, pulls, and terminates cablePerforms maintenance on cable systems by installing, repairing, programming, and upgrading cable infrastructurePerforms preventive maintenance and repairs by troubleshooting cabling system issuesApplies established procedures in testing every newly installed or relocated cableKeeps cable neatly tied and bundled while maintaining safety standardPromotes environmental, health, and safety policies within the workplacePerforms installation and routine maintenance of structured cabling systemsWorks at heights, poles, and small confined spacesWorks outdoors and in inclement weather conditionsInstalls devices for alarm, fire, security, access, and automation systemsInstallation of ethernet, coaxial and fiber optic cablingInstallation of data equipment, including data racks, patch panels, cable trays, etc.Installation of security cameras and access control hardwareInstallation of network equipment including switches, firewalls, and wireless devicesInstallation of computer equipment and peripheralsPerforms termination and testing of cablingOperates a variety of tools, such as hand tools, power tools, ladders, scissor lifts, and test equipment
Position Requirements
Knowledge of labeling, pulling and dressing category 3, category 5e, category 6, category 6a and fiber opticA strong working knowledge of TIA, EIA, BICSI, or NEC Standards; including installation, troubleshooting and service, and working knowledge of building codes, electrical codes, communication standards, xzbcwsv and installation may be requiredExperience with installing j-hooks, ladder racks and cable tray, and working in MDF/IDF environments may be requiredGood knowledge of LAN/WAN networks, TCP/IP protocols and network technologiesAssociate Degree or equivalent combination of education and experienceIndustry certifications preferred (Examples: CCENT/CCNA, Network+, BICSI, Siemens, Corning, Leviton, AV, Fiber Optic)Basic written and verbal communications skills are essential for documentation, report writing, and rapport buildingAbility to work well both independently and as part of a professional teamMust be able to effectively prioritize tasks and complete them in good time applying planning and forward-thinking skillsMust be service oriented and capable of relationship buildingMust be able to perform basic math functions and calculationsStrong computer skills and knowledge of the Microsoft Office suiteMust maintain a valid driver’s license
