Senior Architect Job Description

Position Overview

• Position Title: Senior Architect / Senior Project Architect
• Experience Level: 8-12+ years of post-qualification experience
• Education Requirement: Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) or Master of Architecture (M.Arch)
• Reporting To: Principal Architect / Studio Director / Partners
• Licensure: Mandatory registration with local architectural licensing board.

Key Responsibilities

Design Leadership & Strategy

• Lead the architectural vision and design direction for multiple complex, large-scale projects simultaneously.
• Establish design concepts, space programming philosophies, and architectural master planning guidelines.
• Run high-level client presentations, pitches, and stakeholder design workshops.

Conduct peer reviews of design packages to ensure peak aesthetic quality, functional optimization, and design integrity.

Technical Direction & Quality Assurance

• Approve final Construction Documentation (CD) sets, specifications, and tender packages.
• Serve as the ultimate authority on complex building envelope details, materials science, and construction methodologies.
• Establish and audit firm-wide QA/QC (Quality Assurance/Quality Control) protocols and drafting standards.
• Troubleshoot critical technical, structural, or MEP design conflicts that intermediate teams cannot resolve.

Project & Financial Management

• Define project scopes, architectural fee structures, delivery schedules, and resource allocation plans.
• Monitor project profitability, staff billable hours, and contractual obligations to prevent scope creep.
• Manage high-value client relationships, acting as the primary escalation point for project or contract disputes.
• Collaborate with business development teams to draft proposals and secure new project bids.

Construction Administration & Oversight

• Oversee the construction administration phase for high-risk or highly sensitive project components.
• Review major change orders, value engineering proposals, and critical contractual disputes on site.
• Lead high-stakes site coordination meetings with general contractors, project management consultants (PMCs), and client reps.

Team Leadership & Mentorship

• Direct, inspire, and manage a studio team composed of Project, Intermediate, and Junior Architects.
• Conduct annual performance evaluations, set career development pathways, and identify training gaps.
• Cultivate a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and sustainable design practices across the firm.

Required Skills & Competencies

Software & Technical Leadership

• Strategic understanding of CAD workflows for project delivery, execution, and clash detection.
• Proficiency with project management platforms (e.g., Asana, MS Project) and financial tracking tools.

Core Knowledge

• Mastery of building systems, structural engineering principles, and MEP integration across diverse typologies (e.g., commercial, residential, institutional).
• Expert-level command over municipal zoning laws, master planning policies, and environmental/sustainability certifications (e.g., LEED, BREEAM, GRIHA).
• Comprehensive understanding of standard construction contracts (e.g., AIA, FIDIC, JCT), liabilities, and risk management.

Soft Skills

• Proven ability to lead, motivate, and retain high-performing design teams.
