Job Description

Akicita Federal is hiring Carpenters to support facility maintenance and construction operations for the Department of Veterans Affairs Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHCS) in Montgomery, AL. In this role, you will perform skilled carpentry work across a VA medical campus, directly contributing to safe, functional, and well-maintained spaces for veterans receiving care.

  • Measure, cut, construct, install, and repair wood and wood-substitute building components including walls, doors, windows, frames, trim work, and cabinets
  • Independently plan and complete projects involving constructing, altering, repairing, and modifying framework, rafters, finished paneling, staircases, trusses, and beams
  • Install and repair metal framing for interior walls and drop ceilings
  • Lay out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood and substitute materials alongside general and precision woodworking techniques
  • Perform concrete and masonry work as required in support of facility projects
  • Construct and repair scaffolding, staging components, concrete forms, dry walls, and roof decking
  • Rotate between the Montgomery and Tuskegee VA campuses as operational needs require

$58,240 - $62,400 a year
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience performing skilled carpentry work in a commercial, institutional, or similar facilities maintenance environment
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools common to the carpentry trade
  • Working knowledge of wood materials and substitutes, including general and precision woodworking techniques
  • Ability to independently plan, measure, lay out, and execute carpentry projects with minimal supervision
  • Familiarity with metal framing for walls and drop ceilings
  • Basic concrete and masonry skills
  • Ability to work a consistent 40-hour week (Mon–Fri, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM) with availability for occasional overtime

  • Prior experience performing carpentry or general maintenance work in a healthcare, government, or institutional facility setting
  • Experience supporting multi-building or multi-campus facility operations
  • Familiarity with VA or federal facility standards and work order processes
  • Ability to coordinate seamlessly with other trades (electricians, plumbers, painters) on joint facility projects
  • Journeyman-level carpentry training or equivalent vocational/trade school background
