Outside Sales Representative – Heavy-Duty Parts
Position Summary
The Outside Sales Representative is responsible for developing and maintaining customer relationships and growing sales of heavy-duty truck, trailer, equipment, and related parts and supplies. This position spends a significant amount of time in the field meeting with customers, identifying their operational needs, providing product solutions, and developing new business opportunities.
The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of the heavy-duty trucking, transportation, construction, or industrial markets and is comfortable working directly with fleet managers, shop personnel, mechanics, owner-operators, purchasing departments, and other commercial customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing commercial customers.
- Identify and pursue new customers and sales opportunities within the assigned territory.
- Make regular in-person sales calls to fleet operators, trucking companies, repair facilities, contractors, industrial customers, and other heavy-duty parts users.
- Promote and sell heavy-duty truck and trailer parts, shop supplies, tools, lubricants, safety products, and other company product lines.
- Work with customers to identify parts and products that meet their operational and equipment needs.
- Prepare quotes, pricing, and product recommendations.
- Follow up on quotes, open orders, backorders, and customer requests.
- Coordinate with inside sales, purchasing, warehouse, and management personnel to ensure customer needs are met.
- Maintain knowledge of current products, vendors, pricing, promotions, and new product offerings.
- Monitor customer purchasing activity and identify opportunities to increase account penetration.
- Assist with resolving customer service, product, delivery, and billing issues when necessary.
- Maintain accurate customer contact information, sales activity, and account notes.
- Participate in trade shows, customer events, vendor demonstrations, and other sales and marketing activities.
- Provide management with feedback regarding customer needs, market conditions, competitive activity, and potential new product lines.
- Maintain a professional company image while visiting customer locations and representing the business in the field.
- Meet established sales, gross-margin, and account-development objectives.
Qualifications
- Previous outside sales, parts sales, heavy-duty trucking, automotive, equipment, industrial, or related experience preferred.
- Knowledge of heavy-duty truck and trailer parts is strongly preferred.
- Ability to identify customer needs and recommend appropriate products and solutions.
- Strong communication, customer service, and relationship-building skills.
- Self-motivated and capable of managing an assigned sales territory with limited supervision.
- Strong organizational and follow-up skills.
- Basic computer skills and ability to learn company sales, inventory, and customer-management systems.
- Ability to prepare quotes and understand pricing, margins, and basic sales calculations.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability and willingness to travel throughout the assigned sales territory.
Preferred Industry Knowledge
Experience or familiarity with products such as:
- Heavy-duty truck and trailer parts
- Brakes, suspension, steering, and wheel-end components
- Lighting and electrical components
- Engine and drivetrain components
- Filters, lubricants, oils, and greases
- Tires and related products
- Cargo control and securement equipment
- Hydraulic components and hoses
- Tools and shop equipment
- PPE and safety supplies
- Fleet maintenance and repair products
Physical & Work Requirements
This position requires regular travel to customer facilities, shops, yards, and job sites. The employee may occasionally be required to lift or handle parts and products, work around commercial vehicles and heavy equipment, and operate in outdoor or industrial environments.
Some overnight or extended travel may be required depending on the assigned territory.
