Schedule: 7:30 AM to 4:00, Monday through Friday; Hours may vary in the Summer
Job Length: Up to six months

The Street Maintenance Worker I performs entry level, semi-skilled work in the
inspection, construction, maintenance and repair of the city’s streets,
sidewalks, alleys, medians, curbs and gutters. They complete a wide variety of
duties, such as hand excavation, heavy lifting, hauling materials, operating
tools and heavy equipment, etc., as part of a larger crew. This job is the first
level of a three-level career progression of Street Maintenance Worker I, II,
and III.
Key Responsibilities
* Performs construction and maintenance activities including concrete and
asphalt removal, prep and finishing, crack seal prep and placement, poly-foam
leveling, pothole repairs; participates in winter snow and ice maintenance
operations; follows established procedures to repair distressed areas in
streets, sidewalks, alleyways, and gutters.
* Operates a variety of specialty equipment and vehicles to complete
construction and maintenance activities including trucks, snowplows, salt
spreader, and hand and power tools.
* Maintains a safe job site and work environment by ensuring proper traffic
control and safety standards as required by City, County, State and Federal
regulations.
* Performs emergency duties, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime
hours as required; may work modified hours as needed.
Qualifications
Experience: No experience is required.
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. The ability to
read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance is required.
Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver's license and favorable driving record
are required. A class B commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker
endorsements are required within six months of employment. Must be able to
operate a commercial vehicle within the State of Kansas.
Environmental or Physical Demands: Street Maintenance Workers perform their job
duties outside in all types of weather and are exposed to conditions including
sun, wind, rain, snow, ice, pollen, dust, fumes, and other allergens or airborne
particles. They are exposed to noise from traffic and equipment. They must be
able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of one’s arms
and legs moving one’s whole body to lift, balance, walk, twist, stoop, kneel,
crouch and while handling or carrying materials. They operate a variety of hand
and power tools, powered equipment, and commercial vehicles. They may drive or
ride from site-to-site multiple times throughout the workday. Must be able to
work safely in distracting situations including high volume traffic areas.
