Directional Drill Operator CDL A
Lester Brothers Excavation, Inc. is seeking a dependable Directional Drill Operator to join our underground utility construction team. This is a great opportunity for someone with a Class A CDL and construction or heavy-equipment experience who wants to develop additional skills in horizontal directional drilling.
Some exposure to directional drilling is preferred, but we are willing to train the right candidate who has relevant field experience, mechanical ability, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn. This position will assist with and perform drilling, locating, equipment setup, and general underground utility work.
What you’ll do
- Operate or assist with operating horizontal directional drilling equipment.
- Assist with drill setup, pilot boring, reaming, and product pullback.
- Learn to read bore profiles, utility maps, project plans, and job specifications.
- Operate bore-tracking and locating equipment to monitor the drill head’s location, depth, pitch, and direction.
- Communicate drill-head information and steering adjustments to other crew members.
- Assist with selecting and changing drill heads, tooling, and reamers.
- Mix and monitor drilling fluids.
- Assist with potholing, exposing utilities, excavation, equipment setup, and general labor.
- Complete daily equipment inspections and report maintenance or repair needs.
- Clean, lubricate, and perform basic maintenance on drilling equipment and tooling.
- Safely operate and transport company vehicles, equipment, and materials.
- Follow company safety policies and applicable OSHA, MIOSHA, MISS DIG, and traffic-control requirements.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
What we’re looking for
- Valid Class A CDL is required.
- CDL must not have an automatic transmission restriction.
- Must be able to operate a commercial motor vehicle with manual transmission.
- Acceptable driving record required.
- Clearinghouse status of non-prohibited and ability to pass a background check.
- Previous directional drilling or bore-locating experience is preferred but not required.
- Underground utility, excavation, construction, heavy-equipment, or related field experience is required.
- Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn directional drilling and locating equipment.
- Ability to follow instructions and work safely around underground utilities and heavy equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a crew.
- Dependable attendance and the ability to report to work on time.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, push, and pull.
- Ability to work on uneven terrain and operate equipment controls for extended periods.
- Work is performed primarily outdoors at active construction and underground utility jobsites.
- Regular exposure to heat, cold, rain, snow, mud, dust, drilling fluids, fumes, vibration, and loud equipment.
- Work is performed around moving vehicles, heavy equipment, open excavations, underground utilities, and traffic.
- Required personal protective equipment must be worn.
- Overtime with occasional Saturdays may be required.
