Job DescriptionUHY Resource Solutions is seeking an experienced Accounting Cleanup Consultant for a project-based engagement. The position is expected to be 4 days on-site in South Carolina.

This hands-on assignment centers on historical accounts payable and general ledger accuracy. The consultant will review payment and posting activity, investigate potential expense-classification discrepancies, trace transactions to available support, reconcile findings, and prepare well-documented accounting corrections. The work requires independent research, sound judgment, and close coordination with the existing finance team while routine operations continue.
Accounting Cleanup Consultant Key ResponsibilitiesReview historical accounts payable registers, payment records, and general ledger activity to identify potential coding or posting discrepancies.Trace transactions to invoices, receipts, payment documentation, and other available records to establish appropriate accounting treatment.Reconcile accounts payable activity and related general ledger balances; isolate unresolved and potentially misclassified items.Research incomplete records, investigate exceptions, and collaborate with accounting personnel to determine appropriate expense classifications.Prepare correcting journal entries and supporting reconciliations for review and approval.Maintain a clear record of research, accounting decisions, proposed adjustments, and supporting documentation.Coordinate with finance leadership and operational personnel without disrupting ongoing accounting priorities.Summarize findings, outstanding items, and completed corrections to support an orderly project handoff.
Accounting Cleanup Consultant Skills And Qualifications10+ years of relevant accounting experience, including substantial hands-on accounts payable, general ledger reconciliation, and accounting cleanup work.Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.Demonstrated experience researching historical transactions, resolving discrepancies, and documenting accurate accounting adjustments.Ability to work effectively with incomplete records and limited source documentation while exercising sound professional judgment.Governmental or nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred; experience with grant-funded expenditures is particularly relevant.Strong Microsoft Excel skills and familiarity with ERP/AP platforms such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, Workday, or comparable systems.Ability to enter an unfamiliar accounting environment, establish priorities quickly, and independently deliver results with limited ramp-up.Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to coordinate with accounting stakeholders and clearly document conclusions.Prior consulting, interim, project-based, advisory, or professional-services experience strongly preferred; ability to balance competing priorities and support practical process improvements.
