Job Description
The Head – EHS will provide strategic leadership and governance for Environment, Health & Safety across multiple API manufacturing facilities. The role is responsible for developing and implementing world-class EHS systems, ensuring compliance with national and international regulations, fostering a strong safety culture, driving sustainability initiatives, and achieving zero harm while supporting business continuity and operational excellence.
The incumbent will partner with Operations, Engineering, Projects, Quality, HR, and Regulatory teams to ensure safe manufacturing practices, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance across all manufacturing locations.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Develop and execute the organization's EHS strategy aligned with business objectives. Lead and standardize EHS practices across multiple API manufacturing plants. Establish annual EHS goals, KPIs, and improvement roadmaps. Drive a "Zero Harm" safety culture throughout the organization. Lead ESG and sustainability initiatives related to manufacturing operations.Health & Safety Management
Ensure implementation and continual improvement of Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems (ISO 45001). Develop safety policies, SOPs, standards, and corporate EHS guidelines. Monitor compliance with statutory safety requirements. Lead hazard identification, HAZOP, HIRA, JSA, and risk assessments. Implement Process Safety Management (PSM) programs for hazardous chemical manufacturing. Ensure safe handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous chemicals.Process Safety Management (PSM)
Lead implementation of Process Safety Management programs. Review process safety during plant design and technology transfer. Conduct Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), HAZOP, LOPA, and What-if studies. Monitor critical safety systems including: Pressure Relief Systems Explosion Protection Systems Fire & Gas Detection Systems Emergency Shutdown Systems Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)Environmental Management
Ensure compliance with environmental regulations issued by CPCB/SPCB. Manage: Air emissions Wastewater treatment Hazardous waste management Solvent recovery Environmental monitoring Lead carbon footprint reduction initiatives. Drive water conservation, energy efficiency, and waste minimization programs.Regulatory Compliance
Ensure compliance with: Factories Act State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) CPCB Guidelines PESO Regulations MSIHC Rules Chemical Accident Rules Hazardous Waste Rules OSHA Principles ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 Responsible Care Guidelines Coordinate regulatory inspections and statutory audits.Emergency Response & Crisis Management
Develop emergency response plans. Conduct mock drills across all sites. Lead incident command during emergencies. Coordinate with local authorities including Fire Department, Pollution Control Board, and District Administration. Ensure disaster management preparedness.Incident Investigation
Lead investigations for: Near Misses Unsafe Acts Unsafe Conditions Property Damage Environmental Incidents Lost Time Injuries (LTI) Perform Root Cause Analysis using: 5 Why Fishbone Diagram Tap Root RCA Methodology Ensure effective CAPA implementation.Occupational Health
Implement industrial hygiene programs. Conduct exposure monitoring. Monitor occupational diseases. Coordinate periodic medical examinations. Manage ergonomics and wellness initiatives.Audit & Compliance
Lead internal and external EHS audits. Ensure audit readiness. Close audit observations within agreed timelines. Support customer and regulatory inspections.Training & Safety Culture
Develop organization-wide EHS competency programs. Conduct: Safety Induction Contractor Safety Programs Behavioral Safety Programs Leadership Safety Workshops Emergency Response Training Promote employee engagement in safety initiatives.Contractor Safety Management
Implement contractor safety management systems. Review contractor competency and safety performance. Ensure permit-to-work compliance. Monitor contractor safety during shutdowns, maintenance, and projects.Projects & Engineering Support
Provide EHS inputs for: New plant construction Plant expansion Commissioning Technology transfer Participate in design reviews and safety approvals.Sustainability & ESG
Lead sustainability initiatives including: Energy conservation Water conservation Waste reduction Renewable energy adoption Carbon emission reduction Publish sustainability metrics and reports.Stakeholder Management
Collaborate with: Operations Engineering QA/QC Projects HR Procurement Regulatory Affairs Represent the organization before statutory authorities and external auditors.Team Leadership

B. E./B. Tech in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or equivalent. Diploma/PG Diploma in Industrial Safety (Mandatory). M. Tech/M. E. in Safety or Environmental Engineering (Preferred). NEBOSH IGC/Diploma or equivalent international certification (Preferred).Experience
18–25 years of experience in EHS within the Pharmaceutical API, Specialty Chemicals, Fine Chemicals, or Chemical Manufacturing industry. Minimum 8–10 years in a leadership role managing EHS across multiple manufacturing sites. Experience handling highly hazardous chemical processes, solvent recovery, utilities, and large-scale API manufacturing. Proven experience in regulatory inspections, process safety management, and sustainability initiatives.Details
