Position Overview

A well-established nonprofit organization in Newark, NJ is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee key accounting and financial operations. This position will work closely with senior leadership and will be responsible for financial reporting, grant accounting and compliance, audits, internal controls, and oversight of accounting staff.

The ideal candidate will have a strong nonprofit accounting background , significant experience managing local, state, and federal grants , and prior supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and oversee timely and accurate financial statements and monthly financial reporting.
• Review balance sheets, operating schedules, bank reconciliations, and related financial analyses.
• Coordinate external audits, including the annual Single Audit .
• Prepare and review audit schedules and oversee internal audit activities.
• Oversee grant accounting and reporting , ensuring compliance, timely submissions, and reimbursements.
• Manage and oversee accounts receivable and provide oversight of AP/AR functions.
• Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
• Implement appropriate cost-allocation methodologies across programs and functional areas.
• Oversee fixed assets and support capital budgeting activities.
• Review payroll transactions for accuracy and compliance.
• Manage regulatory and tax reporting, including Form 990 and Form 5500 .
• Maintain the accounting system and recommend improvements and enhancements.
• Provide financial guidance to program staff and other internal stakeholders.
• Supervise and develop accounting and finance staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline required.
• 8+ years of related accounting experience.
• Strong nonprofit accounting experience required .
• Demonstrated experience with grant accounting, compliance, allocations, and reporting , including local, state, and federal grants.
• Previous supervisory or management experience.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, internal controls, and tax requirements.
• Experience supporting external audits and Single Audits.
• Strong Excel skills.
• MIP/Abila experience is a plus.
• CPA, CMA, or Master’s degree is a plus.
