Judicial Law Clerk - Juvenile Court

Job Description

The Judicial Law Clerk is a non-civil service position located within Juvenile Court and performs legal research and various administrative tasks requiring analysis and independent reasoning for a Judge. Performs related duties as required.


Davidson County Juvenile Courts mission is to prevent problems, promote the positive potential in all people, and pursue fairness and hope.

***NOTE: This is a one (1) year appointment.***

  • Assists Judge in preparing legal arguments or preparation for cases.
  • Writes petitions for court appeals.
  • Research law and files for motions.
  • Reviews and analyzes available precedents relevant to cases.
  • May assist with interviewing clients, witnesses, or other parties associated with pending litigation.
  • Conducts research for the preparation of legal opinions on matters of interest to the Judge.
  • Performs substantive legal analysis or requests for information under the provisions of various acts.
  • Performs administrative duties.
  • May assist with maintenance of a legal library.
  • Assembles data and prepares reports, using word processing packages, databases, and/or spreadsheets as needed.
  • Gathers, sorts, classifies, and interprets various data.
  • Compiles and maintains legal related data.
  • Deliver briefs to clerks and attorneys as necessary.
  • Keeps document file and correspondence of cases.
  • Works with mentors and supports court interns.



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Current graduate of law school waiting to take the Bar Examination or awaiting the results of the Bar Examination.

Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of criminal, juvenile, and/or civic law and litigation procedures
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals and terminology of the Tennessee Court structure and the legal system of the United States
  • Knowledge of principles, concepts, and methods of legal research and analysis
  • Ability to prepare legal briefs and summaries of analyses
