Job Description

Become part of a dedicated team that provides environmentally responsible waste disposal and recycling services while protecting the health, safety, and quality of life for our community with the Solid Waste Management Department.

Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of semi-skilled and general maintenance duties to support the safe, efficient operation of departmental buildings, grounds, and equipment. The employee also operates and maintains light- to medium-duty machinery and equipment in accordance with established safety procedures.   • Performs routine building and grounds maintenance at designated collection sites and departmental facilities
  • Completes minor repairs to buildings, fixtures, equipment, and structures as assigned
  • Troubleshoots routine maintenance concerns and promptly reports larger or more complex issues to the appropriate supervisor
  • Maintains clean and orderly grounds by collecting litter, emptying outdoor receptacles, and removing debris from walkways and parking areas
  • Properly dispose of or recycles collected waste in accordance with established procedures
  • Inspects grounds for potential hazards and reports landscaping, maintenance, or safety concerns
  • Safely operates, cleans, and inspects equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and litter-collection equipment
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance and follows manufacturer instructions, established safety procedures, and applicable lockout/tagout requirements
  • Reports equipment defects and coordinates necessary repairs with maintenance personnel or authorized vendors
  • Assembles, disassembles, transports, stages, and stores flooring, chairs, track walls, barriers, and other equipment used for special events and programs
  • Follows approved layouts and supervisory instructions to ensure event areas are prepared safely, accurately, and on schedule
  • Performs general labor and custodial duties, including sweeping, mopping, cleaning restrooms, removing trash, and addressing minor plumbing or lighting-related cleanup needs
  • Monitors custodial supply levels and assists with maintaining an accurate inventory of materials and supplies
  • Assists with applying fixed-asset identification tags, updating asset records, relocating tagged equipment for audits, and supporting departmental inventory-control activities

High school diploma or GED, supplemented by six (6) months of experience and/or training involving grounds or building maintenance/trades work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of the basic methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in building, grounds, and equipment maintenance
  • Knowledge of routine building and grounds preparation, repair, and maintenance practices
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with general maintenance work
  • Skills in safely operating and maintaining motorized machinery, maintenance equipment, power tools, and hand tools
  • Skills in inspecting tools and equipment, identifying routine maintenance needs, and reporting defects or safety concerns
  • Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and equipment required to perform assigned duties
  • Ability to read and interpret building diagrams, layouts, and related instructions for event setup
  • Ability to assemble, arrange, and remove event equipment according to approved plans and supervisory direction
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions accurately
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance and general labor duties safely, efficiently, and independently
  • Ability to communicate and interact with the public in a courteous, tactful, and professional manner
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, vendors, and the public

Conditions of Employment

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.
