Job Description

Speech Language Pathologist Job Description

Position Title: Speech Language Pathologist

Reports To: Clinical Director

Supervises: Students, Clinical Fellows (if indicated)

A Clinician First Practice

At Arizona Speech and Swallow Therapy, we believe patient outcomes are only as strong as the clinicians delivering care. That is why we built this practice around our clinicians, not around a productivity quota. Your schedule includes real time for session prep, caregiver coordination, and treatment planning. We designed every part of this role to prevent burnout, because a clinician who has room to think does their best work.

Basic Objectives

The purpose of this position is to manage patient engagement and oversee each patient's course of care throughout their speech therapy journey. Success in this role requires fostering a warm, supportive, and motivating relationship with patients and families so that meaningful progress can be made toward communication and swallowing goals. This allows you to fully utilize your clinical expertise as a speech-language pathologist to help patients regain independence, confidence, and quality of life.

The SLP is responsible for providing direct clinical care, designing and supervising individualized treatment plans, and ensuring that all patients receive services consistent with best practices and the highest ethical standards. In addition, the SLP is expected to contribute to a welcoming clinical environment and collaborate effectively with colleagues, caregivers, and referral sources.

This position requires excellent clinical judgment, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to balance patient-centered care with documentation, communication, and team responsibilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Complete comprehensive speech-language and swallowing evaluations, establish individualized plans of care, and update goals in accordance with patient needs and clinical best practices.
  • Provide direct evidence-based therapy for adults with communication, cognitive, voice, and swallowing disorders.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough documentation in compliance with state licensure standards, ASHA guidelines, and company policies.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and caregivers to promote understanding, support carryover, and foster engagement throughout treatment.
  • Collaborate with referring physicians and other healthcare providers to ensure continuity and quality of care.
  • Provide patient and family education, home exercise programs, and strategies to support progress outside of therapy sessions.
  • Participate in quality assurance by tracking patient progress, plan-of-care adherence, and therapy outcomes.
  • Actively contribute to weekly team meetings, case discussions, and clinic initiatives.
  • Serve as a mentor and resource for clinical fellows or students, if applicable.
  • Uphold a safe, ethical, and patient-centered clinical environment.
  • Participate in outreach, patient retention, and relationship-building efforts (including communication with past patients and referral sources as well as participate in events held in the community).
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the clinic director or owner.

Desired Outcomes

The desired outcome of the SLP position is patients helped. This means ensuring that patients engage fully in their treatment, meet their goals, and leave therapy with improved skills, confidence, and independence.

A patient helped is one who:

  • Buys into and commits to their plan of care during the initial evaluation
  • Shows up to every therapy appointment during their plan of care
  • Reaches all of their goals and achieves a fully recovered state
  • Successfully discharges from therapy services
  • Tells their friends, family, and community how much Arizona Speech and Swallow Therapy helped them and promotes our practice. (This allows us to help as many people as possible)

Our mission is to help as many people as possible reclaim their voice, communication, and swallowing abilities. We achieve this by delivering a patient experience that is compassionate, effective, and tailored to what each individual values most in their recovery.

Success in this role is measured by clinical and practice-specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

Total Visits Completed = People Helped

Initial Evaluations = New Patients Impacted

Patient's Arrival Rate = Patient Impact

Completed Plan Of Care % = Patient Impact

Average Frequency Per Week = Patient Impact Potential

Skilled Units Per Visit = Quality Of Care
