Job Description

The anticipated hiring range is $48,048 - 50,686.
The Department of Parks Recreation and Community Facilities is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Maintenance Technician, Senior. This job class maintains and makes repairs for the City of Richmonds parks, trails, cemeteries, and facilities through the performance of skilled labor and technical work.
Incumbents will serve as lead over an assigned work crew and provide training to entry level and/or seasonal and temporary staff. Work may include assessing and identifying repair needs and recommending action; providing maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and parts; operating assigned light and heavy equipment, machinery, or shop equipment; maintaining records and inventory; recommending equipment and supply purchases; maintaining cleanliness of work areas, tools and equipment; ensuring safe use of hazardous materials and chemicals; adhering to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Operating heavy equipment, power and hand tools
  • Park maintenance including mowing, weed eating, table, bench & shelter repairs & maintenance, ball field maintenance, snow removal, fence repair & installation, and general landscaping, trail construction and maintenance, volunteer coordination, tree & shrub care, rigging, truck and trailer hauling, trash, litter, debris and recycling removal, and basic carpentry
  • Facilities maintenance including cleaning, repairs, and painting
  • Determining repairs necessary on faulty equipment and making repairs as needed or notifying proper maintenance personnel to handle repairs
  • Assisting maintenance personnel in other classifications, such as plumbers and electricians, in performing their duties
  • Preparing and presenting reports, maintaining work order logs
  • Provide park guest with friendly & professional customer service, useful information and recommendations for safe park and facility usage
  • Performing other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate technical information and requirements in a clear, accurate and understandable manner
  • Ability to recognize conditions that may jeopardize personal safety
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate staff
  • Experience using Microsoft Office to include Excel, Outlook and Word
  • Demonstrated skill in timely, accurate and excellent record keeping
  • Ability to problem solve, prioritize tasks and find creative solutions
  • Basic familiarity with City of Richmond Parks and Facilities
Minimum Training and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED and at least 18 years old
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
Preferred Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses:
  • Three (3) or more years work experience in parks and/or community facilities
  • Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or ability to acquire within 90 days of hiring
  • Certified Playground Inspector or ability to acquire within 90 days of hiring
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Experience with community/volunteer engagement

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly talk, hear, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently climb, balance, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift; and occasionally stoop, crawl, finger, grasp, and feel. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
