Fashion & Technical Designer – Women’s Indian Ethnic Wear
GURKAARI™ · Chandigarh, India
Job Description
GURKAARI™ | Timeless • Elegant • Ethnic
GURKAARI™ is an emerging premium Indian women’s fashion and lifestyle brand preparing its debut collection. We are looking for a talented Fashion & Technical Designer with genuine experience in women’s Indian ethnic wear to collaborate with us on the development of our launch collection.
This is not a graphic illustration-only role. We need someone who understands both the creative and practical development of garments, from concept through sampling and production readiness.
THE ROLE
You will work closely with GURKAARI’s Design Lead to translate creative concepts, sketches, references and initial design directions into distinctive, commercially viable and manufacturable garments.
The initial project will focus on approximately 15 women’s ethnic-wear designs, including Punjabi suits, kurta sets, coordinated sets, bottoms and dupattas.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop and refine women’s Indian ethnic-wear concepts.
• Create fashion sketches and technical flats.
• Advise on silhouettes, fabrics, colours, trims and garment construction.
• Develop embroidery and embellishment concepts and placement specifications.
• Understand techniques such as resham work, zari, zardozi, dabka, sequins, beads and other relevant Indian surface embellishments.
• Prepare production-ready technical specifications and tech packs.
• Develop measurement/POM specifications and garment construction details.
• Define fabrics, linings, trims, closures and other components.
• Work with tailors, pattern masters, embroiderers and sampling vendors.
• Participate in sample reviews, fittings and fit corrections.
• Help translate master designs into a reliable made-to-measure production process.
• Maintain consistency between approved designs and final samples.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
We are particularly interested in candidates with hands-on experience in:
• Women’s Indian and Punjabi ethnic wear
• Punjabi suits and kurta sets
• Salwar, straight trousers, palazzos and related bottoms
• Dupattas and their finishing and embellishment
• Indian textiles and fabrics
• Embroidery and surface ornamentation
• Garment construction
• Technical flats and tech packs
• Measurement specifications
• Sampling and fittings
• Made-to-measure and custom-fit garments
Experience limited primarily to Western wear, T-shirts, sportswear or fashion illustration will not be sufficient for this project.
WHAT TO SEND US
Please provide:
1. Your portfolio.
2. At least one complete example of an Indian women’s ethnic-wear design developed by you.
3. A sample technical flat or production tech pack, if available.
4. Details of your experience working with tailors, pattern masters, embroiderers or garment manufacturers.
5. Your current location.
6. Availability for the next 6–8 weeks.
7. Your preferred commercial arrangement or project fee.
ENGAGEMENT
Project-based / Freelance Contract
Chandigarh–Mohali–Ludhiana candidates are preferred because the project may require physical participation in selected sampling, fitting and product-development sessions. Strong candidates from other locations (Delhi-NCR, Mumbai etc.) may also be considered based on their experience in required categories.
The successful designer may have the opportunity to continue working with GURKAARI on future collections as well.
