Ready for the Next Step in Your Tax Career?

An established and growing CPA and advisory firm is looking for an experienced Tax Director to take on a key leadership position within its New York practice.

This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys the technical side of tax but wants to be more involved in client relationships, developing people and helping shape the direction of a growing practice .

You'll work closely with the Partners, take ownership of a sophisticated client portfolio and play an important role in the firm's continued expansion.

For an experienced Senior Tax Manager looking to step up, or an existing Director seeking greater responsibility and influence, this could be an excellent move.

The Opportunity

You'll oversee a diverse portfolio of clients, including high-net-worth individuals, privately held businesses, partnerships, corporations and trusts.

The work covers a broad range of tax matters, including:

  • Individual and high-net-worth taxation.
  • Trusts, estates and fiduciary taxation.
  • Partnership and corporate taxation.
  • Multistate tax compliance and planning.
  • Complex tax research and advisory projects.
  • Tax planning for business owners and closely held companies.
  • Real estate taxation, depending on your experience.

This isn't simply a position focused on reviewing returns. You'll be expected to understand your clients' wider financial and business circumstances, identify planning opportunities and provide proactive advice.

Your Responsibilities

Client Leadership & Advisory

  • Act as the primary relationship contact for key clients.
  • Oversee complex federal, state and multistate tax engagements.
  • Review individual, fiduciary, partnership and corporate tax returns.
  • Provide strategic tax planning and technical advice.
  • Identify opportunities to improve clients' tax positions.
  • Advise on changing tax legislation and its implications.
  • Work directly with Partners on complex client matters.

Practice & Team Leadership

  • Lead and develop Tax Managers, Seniors and Associates.
  • Oversee engagement planning, staffing, workflow and deadlines.
  • Maintain high standards of technical quality and client service.
  • Mentor future leaders within the tax department.
  • Collaborate with Partners on improving processes and team performance.
  • Support recruitment, training and the continued development of the practice.

Business Development

  • Build and strengthen long-term client relationships.
  • Identify opportunities to expand existing accounts.
  • Introduce additional advisory and accounting services where appropriate.
  • Contribute to the firm's wider growth strategy.
  • Help develop new business opportunities through professional relationships and referrals.

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years of public accounting tax experience.
  • Active CPA licence required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related discipline.
  • Strong experience across individual, corporate, partnership and fiduciary taxation.
  • Good understanding of federal and multistate tax matters.
  • Previous experience managing complex client engagements.
  • Demonstrated success leading and developing tax professionals.
  • Strong technical research and advisory capabilities.
  • Confidence working directly with business owners and senior decision-makers.
  • Excellent communication, organisation and leadership skills.

Experience working with real estate clients would be particularly advantageous.

Familiarity with UltraTax CS, Checkpoint, QuickBooks or similar accounting and tax platforms would also be beneficial.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

The attraction here is the chance to move into a position where your contribution goes beyond managing compliance deadlines.

You'll benefit from:

  • Hybrid working across the New York Metro area.
  • A senior leadership position within a growing CPA firm.
  • Direct collaboration with Partners and decision-makers.
  • An established client portfolio with complex tax requirements.
  • A strong combination of compliance, planning and advisory work.
  • The opportunity to influence how the tax practice develops.
  • Responsibility for mentoring and building a high-performing team.
  • Exposure to business development and strategic client relationships.
  • A competitive compensation package and employee benefits.
  • The opportunity to establish yourself as a key leader within the firm.
