Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Precision Machinery

The Opportunity

Kensington360 is partnering with an established US manufacturer of advanced precision machinery to recruit an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer.

This opportunity is ideal for an engineer with a strong background in designing complex industrial machinery, machine tools or high-precision capital equipment.

The successful candidate will take ownership of mechanical machine designs from initial concept through detailed engineering, manufacturing, assembly and commissioning.

We're looking for a genuine machine designer: someone comfortable engineering mechanical systems, selecting and sizing critical components, performing calculations and solving complex technical challenges.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical design and development of advanced CNC and precision industrial machinery.
• Develop mechanical systems incorporating spindles, bearings, linear guides, structural frames and other precision motion components.
• Produce detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, engineering drawings and bills of materials.
• Apply mechanical engineering calculations and analysis to validate designs and component selection.
• Improve machine performance with a focus on thermal stability, vibration reduction, reliability and precision.
• Support prototyping, machine assembly, testing and commissioning.
• Collaborate with electrical, controls and applications engineering teams.
• Review engineering designs and provide technical mentorship to junior engineers.
• Troubleshoot mechanical challenges and implement design improvements.
• Manage engineering deliverables against project requirements, budgets and timelines.

Essential Requirements

• Minimum 5 years' experience in mechanical machinery or capital equipment design.
• Proven experience designing substantial industrial machinery, machine tools or similar precision equipment.
• Strong understanding of mechanical systems, component selection and engineering design principles.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks 3D CAD.
• Experience with mechanical assemblies, engineering drawings and manufacturing documentation.
• Basic Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience.
• Understanding of design for manufacturability and machine tool engineering.
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or 16+ years of equivalent relevant industry experience.
• US citizenship or permanent residency (Green Card), as specified for this position.

Highly Desirable Experience

• CNC grinding machines, machine tools or precision manufacturing equipment.
• Designing and sizing bearings, motors, gearboxes, ball screws, linear guides or comparable mechanical components.
• End-to-end mechanical design ownership, from concept development through detailed design.
• Experience with machine dynamics, vibration, thermal stability and precision motion systems.
• Familiarity with AutoCAD 2D.
• Experience mentoring or overseeing other mechanical engineers.
