Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced, highly alert and news-oriented Deputy News Editor / Chief Sub Editor for a Hindi digital news portal. The ideal candidate should possess excellent news sense, strong command of the Hindi language, and a deep understanding of current affairs and the evolving digital news ecosystem.

The candidate will be responsible for monitoring, selecting, editing, translating and publishing news content while ensuring speed, accuracy, factual correctness and high editorial quality. The role also involves managing the news desk, coordinating with team members and other editorial desks, monitoring the website homepage, and ensuring timely coverage of important and breaking news developments.

Key Responsibilities

1. News Monitoring and Selection

• Continuously monitor news agency feeds, newswires and other credible information sources.
• Track major developments through television news channels, news websites and verified social media platforms and handles.
• Identify important, relevant and high-impact stories with strong news judgment.
• Ensure timely identification and coverage of breaking news and developing stories.
• Monitor emerging trends, conversations and viral developments on social media while maintaining editorial caution and verification standards.

2. News Editing and Content Quality

• Edit news copies to ensure accuracy, clarity, readability and adherence to editorial standards.
• Write and improve attractive, informative and impactful Hindi news headlines.
• Ensure that news stories have a logical flow, appropriate structure and reader-friendly presentation.
• Review the factual accuracy and completeness of news reports before publication.
• Check names, figures, dates, locations, quotes and other critical factual details.
• Ensure appropriate selection and placement of photographs, captions and other visual elements.
• Maintain consistency in language, tone and editorial style across published content.

3. Translation and Writing

• Translate news content from English and other available sources into accurate, natural and reader-friendly Hindi.
• Demonstrate excellent translation speed without compromising accuracy or editorial quality.
• Adapt translated content for the Hindi digital audience rather than relying on literal translation.
• Write, rewrite and update news copies quickly during breaking and developing news situations.

4. Homepage and Website Monitoring

• Regularly monitor and update the homepage of the website.
• Ensure that important, breaking and high-priority stories receive appropriate placement.
• Review homepage headlines, photographs and content presentation for accuracy and impact.
• Coordinate with relevant teams to ensure timely updates and corrections.

5. Team and Shift Management

• Manage the assigned editorial team and ensure smooth functioning of the news desk.
• Assign news stories and responsibilities to team members based on priority and workload.
• Monitor the progress and quality of assigned work.
• Guide team members on news selection, writing, translation and editing.
• Ensure adequate coordination and smooth workflow during assigned shifts.
• Take ownership of the desk during breaking news and high-pressure situations.

6. Editorial Coordination

• Maintain regular communication and coordination with Editors and other editorial desks.
• Coordinate with teams handling different news categories and verticals.
• Share important news developments and ensure timely follow-up on major stories.
• Participate actively in editorial discussions, planning and decision-making.
• Escalate sensitive, high-impact or editorially significant developments to senior editors when required.

7. Fact-Checking and Editorial Responsibility

• Ensure that all published content meets the required standards of factual accuracy and credibility.
• Verify information received through social media and other secondary sources before publication.
• Ensure proper attribution and sourcing wherever required.
• Identify and correct factual, grammatical or editorial errors promptly.
• Maintain high standards of responsible journalism, particularly during breaking news situations.

Required Skills and Competencies

• Excellent news sense and strong editorial judgment.
• Exceptional command of written Hindi, including grammar, vocabulary and news-writing style.
• Strong understanding of national, international and regional current affairs.
• Excellent translation skills, particularly English-to-Hindi translation.
• Ability to work quickly and accurately under tight deadlines.
• Strong familiarity with newswires and agency feeds.
• Good understanding of television news monitoring and digital news platforms.
• Strong awareness of social media platforms and their role in breaking and developing news.
• Ability to distinguish between credible information, unverified claims and misinformation.
• Strong headline-writing and copy-editing skills.
• Experience in homepage management and digital news publishing workflows.
• Good leadership, team management and shift management abilities.
• Strong communication and coordination skills.
• Ability to make quick editorial decisions during breaking news situations.

Preferred Experience

• 8-10 years relevant experience in a digital newsroom, news portal or mainstream news organisation.
• Experience in handling a news desk, managing shifts or leading editorial teams will be preferred.
• Familiarity with CMS platforms and digital publishing tools will be an advantage.
