Job Description

Do you enjoy working outdoors? The Operations and Maintenance division of the Public Service Department is seeking an energetic, self-motivated individual to join their team as a Parks Maintenance Worker 500 in maintaining public parks, landscapes, playground equipment, athletic fields, swimming pools, and natural ice rinks ensuring public safety. Special Requirements & Training:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Commercial Drivers License, Group A, with Air Brakes.
  • This position requires the operation of a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds or more. Therefore, pursuant to Section 601a of the Michigan Vehicle Code, the applicant recommended for this position must be able to pass the physical examination mandated by the State of Michigan to be transferred or hired for this position.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Michigan Department of Agriculture Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License, Categories 3A and 3B within one (1) year of employment.
  • The ideal candidate will possess the following:
    • High School Diploma or GED
    • and three (3) years of experience performing parks infrastructure and grounds maintenance duties, which may have included using pesticides.
    Responsibilities include but not limited to :
    • Performs a wide range of preventative maintenance and repairs for the Parks Department.
    • Lifts and hauls tools and other loads weighing fifty (50) pounds on a regular basis, and ninety-five (95) pounds on occasion.
    • Provides written and verbal guidance to Seasonal Laborers on various tasks as assigned by supervision.
    • Makes estimates regarding how long it will take and what materials will be required to complete work projects and provides information verbally or in writing to supervision.
    • Operates a variety of trucks, tractors, and other pieces of equipment with special manual shifting patterns, clutches and braking methods requiring the ability to coordinate both hands and both feet.
    • May spray herbicides and pesticides under supervision by operating vehicles equipped with spraying devices and/or by walking with hand-held spraying apparatus, moving arms and body from side to side to distribute spray evenly.
    • May assist with cemetery operation and tasks as directed.
