Job Description
An employee in this class performs a variety of tasks at the County Animal Shelter to care for and prepare animals for adoption, provide vaccines and medications, and follow the plan of care. Work also includes office support activities such as reception, record keeping, data entry and adoptions processing. Work involves ensuring the animal shelter is maintained in a clean and safe condition, feeding, handling, and providing custodial care to animals in the shelter and assisting the general public in claiming and adopting animals. Employees are also responsible for preparing and maintaining various records pertaining to animal identification, animal populations, etc. as well as public contact answering telephones and responding to routine inquiries or requests for services. Starting pay is $40,744Participates in triaging animals that arrive; observes animals for health and behavioral issues.
Cleans and sanitizes animal kennels; provides food and water to confined animals; makes routine inspections of animals and their cages to monitor health, safety, cleanliness of cages, etc.
Provides office support activities including reception, records compilation, data entry, file management, etc.
Participates in placing animals on line on website and social media to market adoptions; processes adoptions; takes information; takes fees; releases animals to owners.
Participates in preparing animals for possible adoption; medicates, vaccinates animals for rabies; participates in euthanasia as needed.
Participates in planning for and implementing adoption, food drive and rabies clinics events.
Assists interested parties in claiming or adopting confined animals; processes required paperwork, collects fees and provides receipts.
Cares for sick and injured shelter animals; documents injuries with records and pictures; transports animals to veterinarian offices.
Answers telephone calls from the public and provides information on a variety of animal control issues; dispatches animal control officers in response to calls for service.
Maintains a variety of records and reports including adoption, animal population, medications, etc.
Follows regulations from NC Department of Agriculture and other regulations and ordinances.Assists animal control officers with various situations; picks up donations from the public; works with shelter volunteers.
Additional Job Duties
Performs other related work as required.Knowledge of state laws, regulations and local ordinances and departmental policies and procedures relating to medications, care, feeding, exercise and socialization, rabies, euthanasia, and confinement of animals.
Knowledge of breeds of animals to aid in identification of lost pets and to know temperament of various breeds.
Knowledge of an ability to use required office technology.
Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
Knowledge of basic animal health tests.
Skill in customer service excellence, teamwork and collaborative conflict resolution.
Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers .
Ability to communicate effectively with the public, exercising tact, courtesy and firmness when dealing with animal owners and the general public.
Ability to maintain accurate records and reports concerning animals, daily activities and fiscal matters such as fee collection.Graduation from high school, office experience involving contact with the public and experience in handling and caring for animals; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
