Kerkering, Barberio & Co. is seeking an experienced Tax Director to join our Tax practice in Sarasota or Tampa. This is a senior leadership opportunity for a seasoned public accounting professional who enjoys solving complex tax issues, building trusted client relationships, developing talented professionals, and contributing to the continued growth of a strong regional firm.

The Tax Director will provide leadership across key client relationships and complex tax matters while helping strengthen the people and capabilities of the practice. This role is ideal for an experienced tax professional who wants meaningful influence over client service, team development, and practice growth while remaining actively engaged in the work and relationships that make public accounting rewarding.

Work Environment


This position may be based in our Sarasota or Tampa office. After the first 90 days, the position is eligible for KB's hybrid work arrangement, balancing in-office collaboration, client needs, and remote flexibility.

What You'll Do


  • Serve as a trusted advisor to key clients, providing proactive tax planning, consulting, and compliance guidance while building long-term relationships.
  • Lead complex tax matters and provide advanced technical guidance to clients and team members.
  • Oversee the successful delivery of significant tax engagements, including planning, staffing, review, deadlines, budgets, and overall service quality.
  • Provide senior-level review and consultation on complex or higher-risk matters and determine when additional specialized resources should be involved.
  • Develop Senior Managers, Managers, and other professionals through coaching, delegation, feedback, technical guidance, and leadership opportunities while helping build the next generation of firm leaders.
  • Oversee the financial performance of assigned clients and engagements, including realization, leverage, billing, WIP, collections, scope management, and profitability.
  • Drive practice growth through client expansion, referral relationships, professional and community involvement, and new business development.
  • Collaborate across service lines to deliver integrated solutions and connect clients with the appropriate expertise and resources.
  • Help shape the future of the Tax practice through service delivery improvements, strategic initiatives, and continuous development of team capabilities.

What We're Looking For


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • Active CPA license.
  • 10+ years of progressive public accounting tax experience, including significant experience leading complex tax engagements and client relationships.
  • Strong technical knowledge of federal and state taxation and demonstrated ability to research, analyze, and resolve complex tax matters.
  • Experience serving closely held businesses and their owners; experience across multiple entity types and individual taxation strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success developing and leading accounting professionals.
  • Strong client relationship, communication, and advisory skills.
  • Experience managing engagement financial performance, including budgets, realization, billing, WIP, and collections.
  • Demonstrated contribution to business development, client expansion, referral relationships, or other practice-growth activities.
  • Sound professional judgment and the ability to independently navigate complex client, technical, and business matters.
